CAN’T STAND UP FOR FALLING DOWN

By Richard Cameron
Arcola Theatre

Lynette, Ruby and Jodie are three very different women who are strangers to each other. Little do they know that one brutal man will bring their lives together.

Set in the 1980s in post-industrial Doncaster, South Yorkshire, ‘Can’t Stand Up For Falling Down’ follows these three women and their tales of Royce Boland, a man who has a profound and devastating effect on all of their lives in many different ways. Lynette, his wife, is endlessly terrorised by him; Ruby, his ex, desperately tries to keep him away from their seven-year-old son, and Jodie, the childhood sweetheart of the boy Royce bullied to his death, tries to deal with the effect he has had on her life. As we follow these three women through their daily struggles, they show us that even when they feel completely alone it is possible to find strength in the most unlikely of people.
